Outrageous Diets
Monday, March 3, 2008
Amy recently emailed an article they published in the library over at RNCentral titled Diet Overkill: 25 Of the Most Ridiculous (and Ineffective) Popular Diets
With a title like that I immediately thought I had tried them all or at the very least heard of them all, it turns out I hadn't. While I do agree with most of their choices there are a few on the list that I don't consider ridiculous if followed in the right context and as long as you follow the plan as written and transition.
Even thought I thought I've tried everything, I found I had only been on five of the diets on the list, some for months, some for mere hours. There were a few I'd never heard of and a few that still make my stomach churn reading about them again.
Honestly, you'll see results from any diet short term but the questions you must ask yourself include: will this work long term and will this benefit or hurt my health long term.
I would urge anyone out there who is following any diet to discuss your plan with your doctor. Only your doctor knows your medical history and what will be the best fit for your body.
So tell me, how many of these diets have you been on?

I've tried 2 of those. I've heard of most of them and some are simply scary!
I've never tried any of them, actually. Unlike a lot of people in this struggle, this is only the second time I've ever watched what I ate at all, and the first time was when I was pregnant with my daughter, and had gestational diabetes. I was able to eat (while pregnant mind you!) no more than 1500 calories a day, and no less than 1200.
I "lost" about 50 pounds (while gaining about 35 pounds of baby and water and stuff) and ended my pregnancy 15 pounds lower than my starting weight. Unfortunately, I put most of it back on in the 4 years since.
Now I'm on Weight Watchers. But I've known a lot of people who've done Atkins and I still know several on South Beach...
Sadly I have tried a lot of those. ALthough I dont really conside Atkins a "outrageous" diet. Nor South Beach for that matter but I guess its all in how you look at it. Some of those are totally out of wack lol.
Thanks for sharing.

=0)
The only one I'd tried was Slim fast, and even that I didn't really follow the "diet", I just used the product as a meal substitute when I was single and uninterested in cooking.
Some of those are ... YUCK!
*edited by author* I'm really starting to hate the term "most people". I'm currently on one of those diets listed and it was recommended by my dr, who i might add, is one of the top drs. in the state for his specialty! I seriously don't think he'd risk his reputation to recommend something that was horrible for you! There are loads of diets on that list that are bad but some that should hardly be listed along side "tape worm diet" LOL. GROSS! It aggrevates me when authors lump things together like that!
ha ha ... that was a good read! I haven't tried any of these although I did consider Atkins because the two women in my office were on it... but it seemed so illogical to eat fatty food that I stayed away. I am glad I did.
I've tried some of those. I'm currently on Atkins, and it's frustrating how much this "diet" is misunderstood. You only eat no fruit and grain for the first 2 weeks, then you add it back in, slowly. I also see nothing unhealthy about macrobiotic or South Beach. Mostly (Martha's Vineyard, etc) they're marketing gimmicks, but that doesn't mean their unhealthy.
I tried a few of those. Adkins, Subway, Slim fast (which turnd me into a homicidal b*%@!), Southbeach, and I even tried the lemon water pepper thing for about a second. Im surprised the Scarsdale diet didn't make the list. Does anyone remember that one?
I've seen a few of those, but not all. Its rather suprising that some of the rather well known ones are classed as being rather outrageous - although that being said, the shock you put your body through on some of them could be viewed as outrageous :)

I actually haven't intentionally tried any of those. I never was much of a dieter. There was a period when I ate a lot of subway, simply b/c when I was in college, our dorm had a nasty dining hall buffet, or a subway. So I usually chose the subway b/c it was tastier. I did lose weight, but it wasn't intentional
