Monday, February 25, 2008

Everywhere you turn, people are talking about the importance of exercise. So often we think of it only as a tool to aid in weight loss but its benefits are far reaching.

  • Men and women who are even moderately bit have reduced stroke risk
  • Most can reach that fitness range by walking briskly 30 minutes 5 times a week
  • Much previous research on stroke and fitness has been on men
  • Stroke is nation's third-leading cause of death
Man or women, exercise goes far beyond looking good. Just take some time to read this article from CNN to see how moderate exercise can fight back against the risk for stroke.

In addition to adopting a healthy diet, the only exercise DH and I did the first month was walk the neighborhood, about a half mile, every day. We were amazed, not only at the drop in inches, but also at the dive in blood pressure.

Maybe it was all the hand-holding during the walk...

The article said that 59 percent of women have abdominal obesity. That is nonsense. Are they implying that the smallest bulge in the belly is abdominal obesity? Are only women that are model thin not 'at risk'? It was like they were implying that if you weren't model thin then you were at risk for a stroke even if your blood pressure and cholesterol are lower than normal like the smallest amount of fat in the middle was the only risk factor.

Lillian, I think you read another article, perhaps one linked through this article, I can't find that information in this article.
